My life and times as a professional MakeUp Artist

Summer Beauty + high-res version

Summertime beauty essentials:

This is a short post of just a few of my fav summertime beauty essentials… more posts to come with additional items!

I am a big advocate of sun protection… so I will begin with that.  Making sure to protect your face, neck and chest from sun damage and accelerated skin aging requires protection year round.

One great time saver that really addresses the needs of sun protection & make up is the brand Colorescience
http://www.colorescience.com/

with the Sunforgettable line make it easy to apply and reapply sun protection ever 2-3 hrs which is what you need to do to get proper sun protection.    You can carry one of their handy mineral sunscreen with brush in your purse so that you can reapply when you are out without concern about re doing your make up.

Colorescience also have a lip gloss that has an SPF 35 it’s called Sunforgettable lip shine.  Your lips can burn and need protection also so this is a great make up solution.

A great daily lip balm with SPF: I love Blistex Deep Renewal lip treatment and buy them by the dozen and store them around the house and in my purse.  It’s been my go to lip balm for a few years and keeps my lips feeling soft and has anti-agingingredients along with SPF15 and fills in the lines on my lips with Hyaluronic acid… there are just too many good things in this product to name.
http://www.blistex.com/

My favorite solution to looking tan without the sun:
While I love the idea of a tan face in the summer but instead hide from the sun because I know better, I create the look with  Arcona Bronzer/Self Tanner  it’s non toxic and oil free self tanner but very hydrating so my skin looks like it has a fresh healthy glow without the sun damage.
http://www.arcona.com/

When wearing make up myself or on my clients I always start with a clean face and apply Heir Atelier Ultimate Make Up Prep before applying sunscreen.  It hydrates and nourishes the skin to keep make up fresh throughout the day because skin is the canvas for make up.  www.HeirAtelier.com

A great solution to maintain mascara is to use Blinc mascara http://www.blincinc.com/  this unique mascara forms tubes around the lashes and only comes off with both water and pressure… I think it’s better than waterproof mascara and love using it for anyone that has problems with mascara that travels under the eyes or just needs more staying power from their mascara.  And at the end of the night you don’t need special remover… just wash your face and run your lashes between your fingers with water and the mascara will come off easily!

And Goe Oil from
http://jaoltd.com/
This is my favorite body oil that has the most gorgeous scent. The ingredients are 100% natural and I use it on my body as well as on the ends of my hair to smooth dry ends that get an extra beating in the summer sun.  I use this oil to moisturize my skin as well as use it in place of a perfume.. it smells like an island holiday!

Summertime Nails: Trends and Classics

Lets begin with Nude polish, it’s a classic though and not really a trend, but there have been some changes in options that are worth mentioning.  See HIPPxRGB

Keep it Clean… Make Up Artist & Model must have beauty item

A Beauty Insider tip for everyone:  A Make Up Artist and Model must have that every woman can use is one of my kit essentials: the make up remover wipes.  I always carry them for the girls after shoots and some models like to travel with them as well.  It’s often the last thing I am pressing into their hands as we say our farwells after a shoot and they run off to catch their plane to the next booking. Wipes are a great way to remove the make up while they are in the car on the way to the airport.  Even if the girls aren’t catching a flight many want to be able to clean their skin after a shoot and having a great wipe that is gentle and really does remove the make up from the day is important.

In my personal life I use make up wipes to cleanse my skin after a hike or yoga class before I get home to keep my skin fresh and clean.  Another use are for those late nights when you really don’t want to take the time to clean your face before bed… now you have no excuse, it takes under a minute and there is no need to rinse after.  In the hot summer months its the perfect way to freshen up or when going from day to night from the office.  They are easy to throw in your bag or desk at work to have whenever you need them.

I have tried many wipes over the years and my current favorite make up remover wipes are the Gentle Cleansing Wipes from FAB First Aid Beauty

This week I am so excited to share this post from Daily Candy featuring my facial serum Ultimate Make Up Prep.  That Daily Candy chose to include Heir Atelier in its post about primers is such an honor.

DailyCandy Heir

A short version of my story is this: Heir Atelier Ultimate Make Up Prep is a facial serum specifically designed to be all you need to use on clean skin to wear under makeup to help skin look hydrated and radiant and keep make up looking fresher throughout the day.  Initially created in my kitchen for my work as a makeup artist, I began receiving requests from celebrities and fellow makeup artists wanting to purchase it so I found a chemist to replicate my serum and have made it available to everyone and not just the entertainment industry insiders.

How To Become A Make Up Artist

People often ask me how I became a make up artist or how they can become a make up artist so I decided to create a little video to answer that question.  I hope that you find it helpful.  One thing to remember is that this is a field that people come to from many different backgrounds and each working artist has their own unique path that got them to where they are today.  My tips are to help you have some direction and to help you move forward more quickly. I wish you the best of luck!  And if you do any of the things I suggest here please write me and let me know, I would love to hear how you have created your own path and what you are doing.

Here Are 5 Ways To Change Your Mindset Change Your Game!

This weeks blog is the final series on tips for the female entrepreneur.  This part 3 is written by my colleague Francesca Alexander, founder of socialglobalgrind.com and you can find her on Twitter as @GlobalGirl_LA.

Francesca shares her tips on 5 ways to change your mindset and change your game.

www.socialglobalgrind.com

Part 3 Entrepreneurial Activism   by Francesca Alexander

When you open yourself to co-creation with the Universe, it’s not enough to have good intentions. You have to put action behind what you want.

I know how it feels to want to start your incredible business and just be in a holding pattern brought on by one’s self.  My website wasn’t live because it was not perfect enough.  I put mixed messages into the Universe with incomplete Facebook pages and Twitter accounts without completed profile pages.  I had a visible excuse online that showed people I was “Coming Soon” but…when was that?  What’s “soon?”

“I’m waiting to find a web designer to complete the website.”

“I want the perfect logo to identify my brand.”

and the dreaded…

“I’m so busy these days.  This will  launch sometime next

year.”

I totally get how it might be challenging for you to commit to a program and not to mention the strain on most budgets.  I went through this myself. Then last year when I was embarking on involving myself in a mentorship program that had me fly to New York each month it hit me.  Mentorship programs are supposed to challenge you and the first challenge is always cost!

When you really are ready the Universe will help conspire on your behalf to come up with the money.  It did for me.  Whether or not you choose my Hustle & Glow Mentorship program or someone else’s, you will find it’s one of the best investments of your life!

Here Are 5 Ways To Change Your Mindset Change Your Game!

1. Recklessly write down what you really want!

Seriously do it!  And I mean practice reckless abandonment here.  The more impossible the dream seems is what you should write it down.  For instance, I wrote  down a crazy one:  ”I want to find my incredible partner anywhere in the world.”

Take action: I reluctantly did something I didn’t think I ever would do and signed up for an online dating site.  I envisioned my partner in life to be supportive and loving and we would constantly laugh together.  I was honest in my profile and imagined how it would feel walking down the street and creating a life specifically in a particular neighborhood in Pasadena, California.  I wrote the feelings of how that would feel in my journal.  I imagined the look our apartment.  I would even walk the streets of our neighborhood  in which we would live.

I went on dates and just checked in on how I would feel.  Did it match what I wanted?  Eventually I know I was onto something one night when I wanted to come home early from a Dave Matthews concert to go online and chat with this amazingly handsome Kiwi who was living in Dubai at the time.

We have been married now coming on four years next week.

“When having a rough day as an entrepreneur say to yourself “eff the 40 hour work week!” Feel better?”

-Francesca Alexander

2. Create A Vision Board

There is something magical about clipping images and placing them on a board.  I use Pinterest for my personal vision board now.  Like all of my vision boards in the past there are items there that have come true.

Take action: Take some time during the day and collect images of what you want your life to look like.  Don’t be afraid to do this in your business as well.  If you want to be a writer, create a book cover.  If you want to have a boutique that will house vintage handbags create the floor plan of your shop.  Visualize how it would feel once you have what you want.

3. Be Real, Be True About What You Want

Is what you want really in your pleasure?  I know this sounds funny but we do this.  I had a friend in high school who had a dream to be nurse.  She pursued it, got her degree and started working at a local hospital soon thereafter.  I bumped into her years later and she shared with me how she’d wished she had taken that time to backpack in Europe instead of going to school for nursing.   My friend pursued her “dream” because she would be the third generation of nurses in her family.  Update: my friend is now a very talented artist. She has always been one.

Take action: If you were going to write a story of how you became your most desired self, how would it start?  Create steps of what you need to do. Now schedule it!

“If you don’t schedule it, it’s not real.” -Marie Forleo

“Push your edge! Do anything that is uncomfortable. It will help you flex your entrepreneurial muscle.” -Francesca Alexander

4. Get a Mentorship!

When we are in our dreaming faze, chances are we need advice from an expert. Seek a mentor in your field and check out their website.  If it’s a good match, pursue them.

Take action:  Do anything you can to learn from those who give you hope and knowledge.  Ask if they have a mentorship program.  Don’t offer to intern unless your under 22. Internships have their value but mentorship honors your experience and you need to take yourself seriously as a professional.  This also provides a change shift. When you exchange money for a mentorship program, a profound shift happens.  The energy surrounding your intentions is now in alignment in the direction for real change.

5. Invest in Yourself

This is big!  Once you decide that you are worth investing in yourself to reach your goals you will stand in your power!   I remember crying when I purchased my first plane ticket to New York to meet my mentor.  It was life changing.  Seriously. I have come along way. There was a time when,  I mean, I would rather have had a deadbeat boyfriend ask me for money and give it to him rather than pay for anything worth having for myself! By committing big financially to your education and pleasure, the Universe conspires on your behalf.

Take action:  Commit to the process.  Any process!  Go in guns blazing.  Do the process of the program wholeheartedly.  Ask for help when it gets tough and get an accountability partner.  Also make sure that you will get the type of support that you need before you invest from your mentor.  Chances are if you seek it, the right mentor will come to you.

Professional Make Up Artist Kendra Richards shares tips for Entrepreneurial women

I am going to begin by talking about a basic mindset before I even talk about make up specifics.

I believe that as entrepreneurial women we need to show up for ourselves just like we do for our clients…

When you work for yourself and especially work from home it’s easy to slip into the habit of not putting yourself together, not bothering to dress in something that makes you feel empowered and great, or doing your hair and make up because you think nobody is going to see you.  While it may seem that is exactly the appeal of being able to work from home what we are forgetting is that we are someone and we are worth showing up for.  Showing up for ourselves first and foremost helps us show up for others.

As a professional make up artist who works some days on set with talent and other days from home as a entrepreneur with my own facial serum my schedule varies but I can tell you that the days that I work from home and show up for myself just like I do for clients are more productive and I feel more positive about my day.  Showing up for yourself affects your overall mood and productivity level.  Now the degree of dressing up and doing hair and make up is up to you just understand that it’s the intention behind it is really most important.  So put something you love on and do a little hair and make up and see for yourself what I mean.

Ok, now that I have shared that I want to address some questions that I have been asked by women who are already int the work orce or who are looking to re-enter the workforce:

Make Up for professional Headshots

Your make up should look polished and professional.  Regardless of what you might do in your personal life in general you will do best professionally speaking by having a polished make up look that doesn’t detract from you but enhance your features.  For example maybe you have fantastic eyes, you can play them up while remaining professional if you use eye shadow in natural tones, simple eyeliner and a coat or two of mascara combed thru with and eyelash comb.  You should save the bright colors, cat eye or heavy smoky eye make up and tons of mascara for example for your personal life.  The message that you translate in a photo should be professional and capable.

Here is an image from my portfolio of polished clean make up that does not over power as one example of what you might aim for in your look.

Clean polished make up

Clean polished make up

Think of women like Barbara Walters, Erin Burnett, Katie Couric and Michelle Obama.. all women who look polished and put together but their make up and hair are not distracting.  That concept can be translated no matter what your age or profession.

How to look good for a Skype Interview

Many people now do interviews via Skype.  That can be a great thing or not if you are skyping from a room with poor lighting.  Since this will be the first impression you may have with a prospective boss you want to look your best.  Something I have learned from being in the entertainment business is that lighting is everything.  One trick I use is to put a light behind and above my computer screen to mimic the kind of lighting that you get when you are being filmed. on camera professionally.  It’s not perfect but tons more flattering than basic overhead light or whatever ambient light is in a room.  I have snapped a shot of what I do to show you as well as the actual desk lamp that I use.  I hope that it helps you to see what I am doing.  You can try this and test it before you have your Skype meeting, see how you look on the screen both ways and adjust the light until you feel you look your best.

Here are some images of the set up I do at home so you can see what I mean.  You will see the kind of desk lamp I use and then how I set that up behind the computer screen and tilt it so that it shines directly on my face to light me up while I am talking… usually I have to move it back a little so it’s not too bright but is flattering.  Give it a try, you will see what a difference it makes.

What are the basic make up items I need for a professional make up look

You can do as little or as much as you feel is best for you and most comfortable with.  Here is a basic guideline.

Begin with a good make up prep; I always prep my clients skin with Heir Atelier Ultimate Make Up Prep  (I created it to prepare the face for make up and create the perfect canvas as well as help make up look fresher and last longer)  www.heiratelier.com

Use foundation or tinted moisturizer and concealer where needed

Eye shadow if you like in neutral colors, preferably matte not shimmery.  An option to eyeshadow is to use a flesh tone concealer to correct discoloration or darkness over the eye area and then use setting powder to create a fresh look instead of shadow for example in the case of deep set eyes.

Eyeliner  to apply at the lash line (Brown or Black)

Mascara (Brown or Black)

Make Up Brushes and Eyelash curler if you have straight lashes

Blusher (nothing too pink or with shimmer/glitter)

Lipstick or lip balm… nothing overly shiny or sparkly for professional make up.   Lip liner if you want.

Light face powder only where needed if you like

These are basic guidelines to give you some direction to keep the focus on you and what you do or your products.

Those are the most frequently asked questions I get from women who are working from home or already employed or wanting to re-enter the workforce.  Hope that helps.
